HISTORY OF THE GARRISON EAGLE LODGE
On the 12th March 1932 the Garrison Lodge was formed by members of the Armed Forces serving within the Garrison of Folkestone, hence the name Garrison. There was also a Lodge running at R.A.F. Hawkinge (just outside Folkestone) during the war and after. This lodge was the Eagle Lodge. We are not sure where the name Eagle came from, but it does not take a lot of imagination to think it would have come from those brave fly-boys stationed up at the Hawkinge R.A.F. camp. Towards the later part of the 1970's both lodges were struggling, in fact the Eagle Lodge were almost at an end. So the inevitable happened in 1980, the two lodges got together and amalgamation took place.
In 2010 the Shorncliff Unity Lodge 5033 were meeting with just five members one of which was an annual member and of the other four, three were also compliant members of the Garrison Eagle Lodge. It was therefore decided to amalgamate the Shorncliff Unity Lodge with the Garrison Eagle Lodge and while this reduced the number of lodge in the Province it added to the stability of the Garrison Eagle Lodge itself.
The lodge is a happy Lodge and are always happy to meet and greet members from other Provinces.
Should any one reading this know anything of those early years with either the Garrison Lodge or Eagle Lodge, perhaps you were even a member of one of the lodges in those early days, then we would be happy to hear from you. Of course, should you have a photo or two, then what a bonus that would be and we would love to look at them.
THE R.A.O.B. IS IN THEIR BLOOD
Bro Robert Shorland ROH with his 50 year membership emblem and his wife Margaret with a gift given to them from the Province for their valued support to the Order over those 50 years.. Bro Robert was initiated in the Normandy Lodge No 9029 in 1962 and moved to Folkestone in 1980, where they moved into their Guest House "The Wyeclliff" They have now retired but of course the Order is still a very big part of their lives. Bob is Secretary of the Garrison Eagle Lodge and the Knights Chapter. He is also a member and Trustee of the Dover Patrol Lodge and is one of the P.G.Lodge Auditors.
Sadly Brother Bob lost Margaret early in 2018 having lost her battle with cancer and she will be missed by us all, for she was as much a part of the Province as was any member. R.I.P Margaret.
